The Mundelein High School Show Choirs are sponsoring the 2007 Mundelein Idol Talent Competition. This event will feature 16 teenage singers competing $500 first place prize and the title of "Mundelein Idol". At the competition itself, the audience will serve as judges and vote after each round of performances.

Contestants must not be older than 19 on the day of the competition; performers not from Mundelein High School are very much encouraged to compete! For more information, contact John Neubauer, choirs director, at 847-949-2200 Extension 1429.

2007 U.S. Open Brass Band Championships

The U.S. Open is an entertainment contest in format, which is unique among brass band contests in North America. No test piece will be required. Instead, each band will perform a 25-minute set of music of their choosing. Standard brass band instrumentation is required, with a limit of 30 performers plus Conductor for each competing band. Judging will be open, and the adjudicators will be among the finest and most experienced available.

The goal of this competition is to encourage the further growth and development of the brass band movement in North America by providing a unique and exciting forum for the participating bands and by promoting the highest standards of performance and entertainment.

The event is open to the public. Tickets are $20 per person (no student/senior discounts). Online reservation of tickets is available through the above website.

2007- 2008 Gerda Foundation International Vocal Competition

The Gerda Foundation holds an annual competition that is open to men and women regardless of age, nationality, professional experience, repertoire or recommendation, upon the completion of vocal study, as they begin operatic careers.

For first-place winners, the Foundation provides help not otherwise available to classical singers which includes payment to coaches when preparing opera roles, to teachers for “opera languages” and for acting, dance, etc. Other singers heard in the finals are awarded Encouragement Grants to be used for career development.

There are two categories: The "General Competition" is open to singers aged 21-35; the "Wagnerian Singer Competition" is open to singers aged 25-40. The initial round is based on recordings of opera arias submitted on audiotape, videotape, CD, or DVD. Before Thanksgiving, approximately thirty singers will receive invitations to participate in a “live” finals competition in New York.

The North Suburban Symphony (NSS) invites young musicians to apply for the 2007 James Glacking Young Musicians Competition, open to vocalists and instrumentalists (except pianists) in grades 9 through 12. Interested students must reside in either Lake or northern Cook County.

Submit an application, along with a CD of two contrasting selections and an entry fee (full details available online). Forms available from the music departments of most area high schools, and at the NSS website.

Finalists will perform in a concert at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 13. Cash prizes will be presented, and the first-place winner will have the opportunity to perform as soloist with the North Suburban Symphony. For more information, call Melinda Vajdic at 847-374-0339.

For young American opera singers between 20 and 37 years of age, The Bel Canto Vocal Scholarship Competition has become one of the premier events of its kind in the performing arts world. With over $15,000 in scholarships available, the competition draw the best young voices from across the country.

Auditions (considered the 1st round) are held at one of 4 regional locations; selectees proceed to the finals in Rhode Island in December. (Last year, two of the eight finalists were from our metropolitan area: Evanston and Elk Grove Village!)

Midwest Young Artists (MYA) celebrates the 12th year of its annual Walgreens National Concerto Competition! Held at the MYA Center at Fort Sheridan, the competition draws more than 200 of the most talented young musicians (through 12th grade) from across the country. Prizes include MYA scholarships, an opportunity to perform with the MYA Symphony Orchestra and other groups, and to perform on the nationally-syndicated "From the Top" radio program.

The competition is open to all instruments, divided into Categories: String / Piano / Voice / Winds & Percussion / Early Music. Students must perform a movement from a concerto or work with orchestral accompaniment; selections must be performed from memory with piano accompaniment (entrants must provide their own accompanist).

2008 Chamber Music Composition Competition

The Chicago Chamber Musicians (CCM) Ensemble is accepting submissions for its first composition competition. Composers age 32 or younger are invited to submit one chamber work, 10-20 minutes in length, written in the past five years for between three and 13 players.

The competition asks composers to submit works that draw from the following instruments: violins, viola, cello, double bass, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, piano and percussion. The competition excludes music scored for historically standard ensembles such as string quartets, piano trios, woodwind quintets or brass quintets, commercially recorded or previously awarded works.

The winning composer will receive a performance of his/her composition by CCM, recording, score and parts copying, and travel and accommodations for the composer to attend rehearsals and performance.

2008 NATS Art Song Composition Competition

The National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) offers a cash award plus a performance of the winning composition at a NATS Conference to the composer of the winning song cycle, group of songs, or extended single song. Competition is open to any composer whose submitted work meets the prescribed requirements, and who pays the competition entry fee.

REQUIREMENTS: The work must be: (1) a song cycle, group of songs, or extended single song of approximately fifteen minutes in length (13-17 minutes acceptable); (2) for single voice and piano; (3) to a text written in English, for which the composer has secured copyright clearance (only text setting permission necessary); (4) composed within the last two years (after Jan. 1, 2006).

AWARDS: 1st place - $2,000 plus the composer's expenses to the 50th NATS National Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, June 27-July 1, 2008, where the premiere performance of the winning composition will be given. 2nd place - $1,000

ENTRY FEE: $30 for each entry (payable in U.S. funds to NATS).

2008 IMEA Journal Cover Contest

The Illinois Music Educators Association (IMEA), in cooperation with the Illinois Art Education Association, is seeking cover art entries from Illinois students currently enrolled in a music class or ensemble in grades K-12 in any public or private school, for their publication, the Illinois Music Educator. All entries must reflect the theme “Music: An Essential Piece”.

The First, Second and Third Place Winners will be recognized and presented a plaque at the Opening General Session of the 2008 All-State Music Conference held in Peoria on January 31, 2008. The top three winner’s artwork will also appear on the IMEA website for the balance of the 2007-2008 school year.

2008 International Trumpet Guild Composition Contest

The International Trumpet Guild (ITG) Competition Contest calls for a "Duet (trumpet and one other instrument) plus Piano". Work should be a new piece written for this competition, composed between 2006 and 2008, and of a 9- to 14-minute duration. It should be "unpremiered", although a tape or CD recording (live or MIDI) of a reading is required to be submitted with the manuscript. The winning compositions will be premiered at the 2008 Internation Trumpet Guild Conference.

First and Second Prizes of $1,500 & $750 respectively.

2007 - 2008 Chicago National Chamber Music Competition

Midwest Young Artists/MYA (the largest and most comprehensive youth ensemble music program in the Midwest) is pleased to announce the inaugural year of its Chicago National Chamber Music Competition, designed to provide an educational as well as a competitive experience for young chamber ensembles.

The competition is open to chamber ensembles in 12th grade and younger and is comprised of two divisions (Open and MYA). The competition is open to all instruments and is divided into the following two categories: Strings & Piano and All Other Instruments (brass, percussion, voice, winds). Ensembles may consist of 3 to 8 musicians, and may use no more than one piano.

Contestants will be competing for over $5,000 in cash prizes and scholarships and the winner of each division will perform in a Winners Recital at the Chicago Cultural Center. The competition is open to the public.

2008 Ravinia "Lincoln Bicentennial" Composition Contest

As part of its 2008-2009 celebration of the Abraham Lincoln bicentennial, Ravinia Festival is challenging composers to capture the spirit of the great statesman in new piano trios inspired by the words of the 16th president. This is the first competition ever staged by North America's oldest music festival.

Winning composers each will receive a $5,000 award along with multiple performances of their submitted work. The links above provide full details, but here are the basics:

  • Submitted work must be a world premiere with no prior performance
  • Composers of all ages and all countries are eligible
  • Work must be in the form of a piano trio (piano, violin, cello)
  • Work's duration must be between 10 and 15 minutes
  • The composer must note which words of Lincoln served as inspiration for the work.

Over One Million Dollars in scholarships and cash prizes for winners at THE High School singer's event!

Sponsored by Classical Singer Magazine, this multi-round competition offers young singers the chance to compete for full and partial tuition scholarships to some of the nation's best colleges supporting the arts.

The first round (Regional) occurs at one of 40 universities across the nation from Nov 01, 2007 to Mar 15, 2008. The top 3 winners and selected finalists from each location will advance to the second round in NYC in May 2008. The second round is held in conjuntion with Classical Singer Magazine's College Expo, where students will meet official representatives of more than 60 universities and conservatories; students can also attend and participate in Master Classes with premier faculty members of these schools.

The top 10 finalists will also be presented with generous cash prizes.

Inter-American Music Awards: A triennial composition competition sponsored by Philanthropies, Inc. (the charitable arm of the Sigma Alpha Iota music fraternity.)

THE COMPOSITION: An original work for children's choir.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to any established composer residing in North, Central, or South America.

Application Procedures: The application may be filled out online, printed out, and mailed, or a blank application can be printed out and filled in by hand and mailed. The judging takes place in the summer of 2008. The winner is announced at 2009 Convention, and the premiere of the winning work takes place during the Convention.
